When to Repair vs. Replace Your AC Unit

A clear decision framework so you don't overpay to keep a dying system alive - or replace one that had years left.

When to Repair vs. Replace Your AC Unit

Houston doesn't give your AC much of a break. By the time you hit Memorial Day, it's running most of the day, and by August it's barely keeping up. When something breaks mid-summer, you're under pressure to decide fast - and that's exactly when it's easy to make a choice you regret.

The repair-or-replace question isn't really about the age of the unit. It's about the cost of what's broken relative to what the system is worth going forward. Here's how to think through it.

The $5,000 rule that actually works

Multiply the unit's age in years by the repair cost in dollars. If that number is over $5,000, replacement is almost always the smarter call. A 12-year-old system needing a $600 repair is worth fixing (12 x 600 = $7,200 - actually over the threshold, so think harder). A 4-year-old system needing the same $600 repair is a no-brainer fix (4 x 600 = $2,400). It's a rough tool, but it keeps you from pouring money into a system you'll replace in two or three years anyway.

Signs the compressor is the problem

The compressor is the most expensive single component in a central AC system. When it starts failing, the repair cost often approaches or exceeds half the cost of a new unit. Watch for these signs:

  • The system blows air but it isn't cold, even after running for a long time
  • You hear a hard clicking or grinding sound when the compressor tries to start
  • The circuit breaker trips repeatedly when the AC kicks on
  • Refrigerant lines are icing over even though the filter is clean
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin

A compressor on a system that's already 10 or 12 years old is rarely worth replacing. By the time you pay for labor and a new compressor, you could be halfway to a new, more efficient unit that comes with a fresh warranty.

What's usually worth fixing

Not every repair is a money pit. Capacitors, contactors, fan motors, and drain line clogs are all relatively inexpensive fixes that can buy several more good years from a healthy system. Refrigerant recharges are worth doing if there's no active leak - but if the leak keeps coming back, you're just renting more time.

Age and efficiency matter more than people realize

A 15-year-old system running at 10 SEER is costing you real money every month compared to a modern 18-20 SEER unit. In Houston, where your AC runs roughly nine months a year, efficiency gains translate to meaningful savings on your Centerpoint bill. Sometimes the right answer is replacement even when the repair is cheap, because the total operating cost of the old system doesn't make sense.

When to get a second opinion

If a technician quotes you over $1,500 for a repair on a system older than eight years, it's worth having another company take a look. Champion and Nash has been doing this work in Greater Houston for over 40 years - when our technicians tell you it's time to replace, they'll show you the numbers behind that recommendation, not just the invoice. Call (713) 360-0564 if you want a straight answer before committing to anything.
